Buying a personalised number plate is a fun and exciting experience, almost, if not as fun as, purchasing a new vehicle. People buy personalised number plates so that their cars can stand out and look more expensive. Furthermore, if they don’t display a person’s name, they might represent something specific about the individual’s identity which they are proud of and would like to show via a private number plate. If you’re unsure about where to get a new number plate ideal for your vehicle – wonder no more, this post explores the most common places where you can buy a new licence plate.
There are many online platforms where you can buy a new number plate, but it’s important to know the advantages and disadvantages of each.
Ebay
This an online marketplace which is recognised all over the world; everyone who has an account on Ebay can sell or but items on this website. Therefore, if you’re wondering where to buy a private number plate from - this is not the best place, as many people can sell number plates which are illegal and not right for the car you own. However, there are some licensed retailers on Ebay who have the permissions from DVLA to sell registration plates, but it is often difficult to recognise which seller can be trusted and which cannot.
DVLA Online
The DVLA website is a site you can trust. This is a good site from where you can get a new personalised number plate online. DLVA have a variety of registration plates available on their site so it’s a good place to start looking for your dream number plate. Furthermore, DVLA are responsible for holding the databases of all drivers in the UK and are in control of the rules and regulations of personalised number plates. However, they do not offer ALL number plates which are available to buy, so it’s good to check other official number plate sites before committing.

If the online options don’t appeal to you and you’re still wondering where to buy a private number plate from, why not try bidding in a number plate auction? This can be done either online or in person. However, going to or participating in a number plate auction does not guarantee you a definite purchase of a number plate, it all depends on the price you’re willing to pay and this could be much higher than the starting price depending on the popularity of the plate. There are 2 types of auctions where you can buy a number plate from - live and timed auctions. A live auction happens in real time in a room with an auctioneer, whereas a timed auction is usually done online, and people place bids without an auctioneer or host.

DVLA Auction
There are many number plate auctions that take place all year round and DVLA offer opportunities where you can buy yourself a new personalised registration plate via a bidding system. However, if you aren’t able to attend the location where the auction will take place, you can bid online or via telephone, but you must register in advance. If you decide to go to the number plate auction you can just register as soon as you get there.
Brightwells
Brightwells are another company that host auctions specifically for cherished number plates (dateless plates from registrations before 1963). Because cherished number plates are more desirable than normal number plates, they tend to be more expensive and there are additional fees when registering to their auctions. Furthermore, if you’re not a regular buyer, known to Brightwells, you must pay a £500 deposit which is refundable if you do not end up making a purchase. If you just want a personalised number plate which is not a cherished one, then this might not be the place to go to get a new number plate.
If you were uncertain of where to buy a private number plate, we hope that this list of the most common places used to buy a personalised licence plate was a useful tool and helped you on your buying journey. If you have any questions, be sure to contact us.
