What are Current Style number plates?
The current style number plates consist of seven characters - two letters followed by a double-digit number and three further letters. Names can even now be spelt out using these registration plates, example: OL11VER. Due to their format, this type of number plate allows for far more combinations than previous versions available before 2001; with I's and Qs not allowed but Z being able to appear as part of its last 3-character segments.
Cars have been released under this system twice yearly since then also: between March 1st-August 31st & September 1st-February 28th respectively.

-
What are the current style number plates?
Current or new style number plate formats begin with two letters which denote the area in which the registration was issued, followed by two numbers which signify the year of the registration, then three random letters. These types of registration number are the post common and they are often the best choice for those customers looking to match a long firstname or surname to match their personalised registration.
-
When were new style plates issued?
New-style number plates, also known as current style number plates, were first issued by the DVLA back in 2001, once the DVLA had exhausted the prefix age identifier options. The current style uses 2 letters at the beginning, representing the area of the issuing plate.
-
Can a current style plate be applied to any car?
No, first of all, DVLA's rules state you cannot put a number plate on your car to make it appear newer than it is. For example, if your vehicle got manufactured in 2007 with a XX07 XXX current style plate for example, you cannot put a plate on it that you might associate with a car built in 2021 with a XX21 XXX current style plate. *However you can do this the other way around to make the 21 issued plate look older (this is permitted).
-
What is the new number plate style UK?
The standard number plate is composed of three elements, the third and fourth of which are the date signifier, which for all new cars registered between 1 March and 1 September 2023 is the 23 plate, released in March of the same year. This will remain the date signifier for the duration of this period.
