How to Buy a Private Number Plate
Buying a private plate is an exciting time, whether you're gifting a private plate or you fancy treating yourself to a new reg.
You'll be pleased to know there is a range of different places to purchase a private number plate for your vehicle, but some of the most popular options are buying via the DVLA, online dealers, or at an auction. Each option comes with pros and cons, as well as stocking different types of number plates.
Buying a private number plate for your car is simple, but to make it even easier we have listed how to buy a private plate to help guide you through the process.
How to Buy a Private Plate from Click4reg
Buying a private plate doesn't have to be difficult. Here at Click4Reg, we have tried to streamline the process as much as possible so you can purchase your new plate in just a few simple clicks.
1. Check you're able to attach private plates to your vehicle
Most regular vehicles can be fitted with private plates, but they must meet the following criteria:
- Be registered with the DVLA
- Be able to move under their own power
- Have or need an MOT certificate
- Have been taxed or have a SORN in place for the previous five years
2. Search our database for your perfect plate
We have a multitude of number plates in our number plate database to pick and choose from within the price range of £200 to £2000. However, you can filter by price if you're looking for a cheap private plate too.
Our unique search technology allows users to use specific keywords or number/letter sequences to find the perfect plate.
3. Choose one and place an order in minutes
We like to keep things easy, so there's no need to fill out lengthy registration forms, choose passwords, or send out activation emails when you're buying a private plate.
Simply select the plate you want, enter your location and nominee's name, and choose your ideal payment method.
4. Pick your preferred payment method
Once you've found your perfect private plate, then it's time for the payment. We accept all major credit cards, including Visa, Amex and Mastercard.
Monthly payment options are also available, allowing you to stretch the cost of your registration over 12 to 48 months - whatever works best for you.
5. Get your ownership documentation as soon as possible
Within minutes of placing an order, you will receive an email confirmation which will give you the option of applying your registration to an existing car or keeping it on a retention certificate to use at a later time.
We pride ourselves on good customer service, and our dedicated transfer staff will assist you in transferring the new plate to your vehicle, as well as providing the V750 or V778. These documents establish you as the owner of the private plate, and you have the authority to mount them on your car.
You'll also receive a new V5C certificate from the DVLA admitting the new plates but retain the originals because you'll need to reinstall them if you sell the car but keep the private plates.
How Long It Takes to Buy and Transfer Private Plates
It can take just 10 minutes to complete your purchase of private plates with Click4Reg. However, you must wait until the DVLA confirms that the transfer has been completed before putting your new private plate on your car. This usually takes about 3-5 weeks but can be up to 12 weeks in rare circumstances.
If it takes longer than 12 weeks to receive your V5C certificate in the post, get in contact with the DVLA. There may be a reason behind the hold-up, search as incorrect documentation being sent.
